A story in the best historical fiction traditions of Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden. Meticulously researched and written in an engaging and fast-paced style with characters you grow to care about. With villians and heroes on both sides, even an Englishman like me could enjoy this adventure into these most barbarous, savage and vicious of times.

What a cracking read !!! The author has clearly done his research !!! The story of two brothers and their cousin eager to join the rebel fight against the English and eventually joining forces with William Wallace to fight on Stirling Bridge - the story is completely relatable as all characters are more than engaging - gory battles - humour - romance - intrigue- villains - and even a witch! - all within a backdrop of historical accuracy - the ending suggests that there may be another book and I look forward to that - will be keeping an eye on this book as i can see it being picked up for a film especially in the light of the Scottish referendum - excellent read !!!

This was a great read, gripping & fast paced, a real page turner. A brilliant account of life in Central Scotland at a very harsh & bloody time in Scotland's history. We have great settings described in huge detail, the build up to the huge battle of Stirling Bridge & yet through the whole book, despite all the graphic detail given, we build an enormous empathy with the leading characters. Will be looking for the sequels!

A well written story of the brutal and bloody struggle by the Scots under Wallace at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, history in the raw. The tale moved on at a good pace which made it compelling reading, interesting characters made one want to find out happened to them next. Can't wait for the next book.

If you are Scottish...read this book...and if you are not, still read this book. I was given this book as a gift as something to read on my sun lounger while on holiday. I couldn't put the thing down, finished it in a couple of days. A gripping story with characters that jump off the page. Loved it ! ... well done Michael Alexander McCarthy.

Game of Thrones without the dragons and the White Walkers!! This filled a gap whilst waiting for the next George R.R. Martin book. Fast-paced, great characters and the best written battle scenes I have read. Can't wait for the next installment.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book a second time. The brutality of war entwined with touching moments in the life of the Scottish rebel warriors fighting alongside Wallace described so vividly, makes you feel immersed as if you were there with them on the scene. Great writing style.

I came across this by chance whilst looking for a historical novel on Scotland’s strife for independence. It blew me away! It took me on a journey through the twelfth century and Edward the First's relentless drive to conquer all before him. Seen through the eyes of a reluctant warrior swept up in the chaos and brutality of the age, it is meticulously researched, historically accurate and jarringly realistic in its depictions of the key battles of the time. The characters are engaging and the story charges along at a fast pace and you will not want to put it down until the last page is turned. Highly recommended! I await the next installment with great anticipation!
